Why participate in consortia programmes?

A GDS connection makes your property bookable by travel agents. A consortia programme makes it findable, priced and preferred within a specific agency network. The two are not the same thing, and the second is where most GDS booking volume actually comes from.

What a consortia programme is

A consortium is a network of travel agencies and travel management companies that negotiates hotel rates on behalf of its members. A travel management company, or TMC, is an agency that manages business travel for corporate clients under contract.

When you join a programme, you agree a rate for that network and it is loaded against a rate code. Travel Agents in the network see your property in their booking tool with that rate attached, and often in the programme's own hotel directory as well. The booking still arrives through Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport in the normal way.

Without a programme, an agent can still find your property if they search for it by name. What they cannot do is find you when they search by city and rate code for a client with a managed travel policy, which is how most agency bookings are actually made.

Where the demand comes from

Agency and TMC demand differs from the demand most accommodation partners already see through online travel agents.

  • It is weighted towards business travel. Of the twenty four programmes open for 2027, most report a corporate share of 65 percent or higher, and several are entirely corporate.
  • It arrives midweek. Corporate travel fills Monday to Thursday, which is the part of the week leisure demand usually leaves alone.
  • It is booked through a policy. Travellers on managed programmes book from an approved list. Being on that list is what puts you in front of them.
  • It is less seasonal. Business travel follows the working calendar rather than the holiday calendar, so it holds up in shoulder months.
  • Some networks carry groups and meetings. Several programmes include meetings and events volume alongside transient bookings.

The scale of the networks

Programme reach varies widely. As an indication, taken from the 2027 programme documentation:

Programme

Network reach

ABC Global Services

90,000 travel advisors, 11,000 locations, 123 countries

American Express GBT

140+ countries, 7,600+ clients, 90 of them in the Fortune 500

CTM Global Hotel Program

80+ agency network, 54,000+ hotels in 193 countries

WIN

9,700 agents across 150+ countries, half of bookings placed in Europe

THOR

3,200+ agencies, 40,000+ hotels

DERhotel.com

Approximately 4,000 German travel agencies

Reach is not the same as relevance. A large North American leisure network is worth less to a German city property than a small German corporate one. Article 3 covers how to judge that.

The two commercial models

Every programme falls into one of two groups, and the difference matters more than any other single fact in this topic.

Commission only. No participation fee and no application process. You pay the network an agency commission, usually 10 percent, on bookings it actually delivers. If the network delivers nothing, it costs you nothing. Six of the twenty four programmes open for 2027 work this way.

Fee bearing. An annual participation fee for listing and rate code distribution, paid in advance. Most award participation through a submission or request for proposal with a fixed deadline. Being accepted is not guaranteed, and the fee is not contingent on bookings.

The practical consequence: the commission only layer carries no financial risk and can be built first. The fee bearing programmes are a purchase decision that benefits from evidence you will not have in your first year.

What you need before you can take part

Consortia participation is not a standalone product. You need a live GDS connection through the NextPax GDS Suite via Reconline first, distributing to Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport. Program rates are loaded against that connection. Also, inform Reconline on the consortia programmes you would like to participate with. When new to NextPax GDS Suite via Reconline - the Reconline team will come with a tailored advice on which consortia program's are effective for your accommodations.

What it is not

Consortia participation is a distribution channel, not a booking forecast. Agencies build familiarity with a property over time, and production usually compounds across a year or more rather than arriving in the first quarter. In competitive city markets this takes longer. What to expect after you enrol sets out realistic timescales.
